Ben was a founding member of the sketch comedy troupe, The Ajo Repertory Company, where he misspent a good six years  of his youth. He went on to write for The Wallace & Ladmo Show, a local television kid's show and continued to work in the theatre as an actor.

After several years of successful roles on stage, Ben, with partner Bruce Miles, opened, The Mill Avenue Theatre, in Tempe, Arizona where he served as Artistic Director for 6 years. It was during this time that he began writing for the stage. In 1991 Ben co-wrote and directed, Guv: The Musical, a review that satirized the many foibles of Arizona politics. Guv enjoyed a two year run, touring the state.
 
In 1994 he wrote a one character play, Goldwater: Mr. Conservative, about the iconic Arizona statesman, Barry Goldwater. The premier was broadcast on KTAR radio, live from Phoenix Theatre. Senator Goldwater approved the script and even had a suggestion or two. He attended a performance in the initial run, and afterward told everyone in the lobby, "That fella did it better than I did!"

In 1999, Ben went on to become Artistic Director for Desert Foothills Theatre in Carefree, Arizona where he created a new play series. The Wallace & Ladmo Show, was the first play to come from this series. It tells the story of the rise and fall of the mock-rock band, Hub Kapp and the Wheels against the back drop of one the most unlikely children's TV shows ever produced. The following year he wrote Escape From Papago Park. This is the story of the single largest POW escape on U.S. soil. World War II German U-boat sailors tunnel out of their desert prison.

Arizona has always been the palette he's worked from. "I like history, Arizona history in particular. I guess that's why I write about it. But I hope the Foundation will be developing plays that are as diverse as Arizona." When asked recently what he is currently working on, Ben replied, “At this moment I’m writing a biographical sort of thing for the Foundation's web site. It’s one of those horrible, "third person" things. Actually, I just finished it.”
